Point4's Chairman Dr. Fred Verkroost presented to Satellite Applications Catapult to update members not only of the continuing success of the Point4's unique RiMiT solution for tree management of critical infrastructure, but also of the award of a grant by the European Space Agency to help fund a €2.1m project to use big data in managing tree risk in power distributions.
The project is planned to run until March 2020 and so far includes distribution network operators (DNOs), UK Power Networks and Scottish Power Energy Networks.
As part of the project, Point4 is partnering with Inmarsat, the satellite services operator, and Galaxy1 Communications, an Inmarsat distribution partner, to provide space segment services, including transferring onsite geo-spatial data via Inmarsat’s BGAN satellite network.
Fred has a long established relationship with Catapult, who have consistently supported Point4 while it has been developing its unique growth modelling application for tree management. This application makes cost effective use of LiDAR and Earth Observation Data to map, analyse and identify the potential risks to power networks from tree growth.
